How are changes decided upon?

When new services and improvements are developed they are installed, sometimes these are developed in response to requests by users. Policy changes are almost always discussed with a randomly selected group of users and Ops and a final decision made based on the chats needs and their response to the proposed changes.

I get kicked back out when trying the secure login

There is a problem if you use proxy with secure login. The chat server now by default prevents IP switching and will kick you out if it seems you change IP address.

If you have a proxy setting for http which is different from the https or secure proxy setting, it look to the chat server like your IP address changes during login as the server switches from secure to non-secure server.

Solution is to set your https or secure proxy setting the same as your http proxy setting. Most cases people have put a http proxy setting but left the https or secure field blank, dont' forget to fill in the port number too!

How do I use server #SG secure login?

Server SG uses a self signed certificate which must be changed once a month.

You must accept this certificate to use the secure pages on alamak.com.sg.

If you accept the cert "until it expires" then it does expire and we rotate it, you will get some kind of connection error when you try to access the secure server there again.

The solution, go under your web browser security section, look for web site certificates, find any that say alamak and delete them. Then try again to access the secure server and accept the new certificate.

I get a security notice when using secure login?

This is normal, when you are on a secure page and leave to a non-secure page you get a popup warning. Just click okay. The secure login is setup properly to use the secure server when transmitting password information. After the first page it switches to the non-secure un-encrypted page to save processing time.

Secure servers use alot of cpu time and the chat would be incredibly slow we ran the whole chat through a secure encryption.

Why isn't my Ops account updated?

It is cpu intensive to open and re-read the password file everytime an Op logs in, so the server stores the accounting and password information and checks this when an Op logs in. If you think you have changed your password or that your account was renewed in the master database you should TRY LOGGING IN WITH THE WRONG PASSWORD. This will cause the chat server to re-load the file including changed account expiration date and password. Then try logging in with the correct password, if the information was changed your problem will be fixed. The master database is currently held on Server_SG, when we update passwords or any account information it happens there first, then the file is encrypted sent to the US servers and un-encrpted. So changes on SG may take a while to register on the other chat servers ... usually less than 24 hours.

What is being done to prevent abuse?

Alamak is setup with a committee system to report abusive Ops and users to administration. Additionally, the committee volunteers read the complaint emails and investigate before taking action. These people are volunteers and being on the committee is not an easy task. They frequently feel unrewarded so users and administration alike should always be thankfull for the committee's help in any situation.

We installed a log which records kicks, bans, and unbans and the time since login these commands are run as well as the reason.

Some rudimentary flood control has been added to the server.

A list of open proxy IP's and blocking of these IP's has been added to the server.

IP switching is disallowed by default to prevent session ID hacking.

A secure login has been added to the chat to prevent password detection by packet sniffing.

A double password system has been added. Ops use theor regular password to login, if this gets hacked, Ops can use the secure change password page or the change password page and their permanent password to change their login password. The only place the permanent password is used, is to change the login password.

Office administration forms for Operator accounts have had several layers of security added to prevent access by un-authorized persons and no longer display passwords of accounts in the account modification fields. Passwords can be changed by the office but not viewed by this method.

How long do suspensions last?

In some cases, severe cases, accounts will be removed, most cases are 1 or 2 weeks, a few would go for a month. More than that then they sit indefinitely or the account is removed. We are fair, we don't care if we know you are not, we will look at the evidence and make a decision as to what is best for the chat.

Paying for Ops doesn't give anyone the right to come in and abuse our other customers, in the end we are a business and cant' accept one client ruining the whole thing just because ( they paid for it ). This also applies to Ops or users who come in and repeately promote competing sevices with our own resources. In these cases we exercise our final option which is we reserve the right to remove any account for any reason without refund or legal recourse, as per the Alamak Policy Pages. Asking nicely works alot better than abusive email, abusive email will definitely make matters worse.
